Buzzing around the lineup like a caged animal, Courtney Conlogue finally found a wave that she could sink her teeth into in the first heat of the morning -- an overhead Cloudbreak runner that scored an 8.33. Earlier, in the opening moments of her Round One heat, she and fellow Californian Lakey Peterson engaged in an old-school priority battle, neither surfer willing to give away inside position to begin the heat.
The result? Both surfers up the point and out of position when the hooter blared. "It's just fun tactics, kinda like playing chess," said Conlogue after her heat win, chalking it up to years of competing against Peterson. "We've got lots of history," she said, with a Cheshire grin. "it's just us being cheeky."
